How to begin (or return) to therapy?
I providing individual depth-oriented psychotherapy for adolescents (ages 13 and older) and adults using psychodynamic and relational approaches.
I also offer family therapy at my office in Wallingford. My clinical training and approach to family work recognizes that the family unit itself—rather than a specific person—is and will be the focus of treatment. I begin by establishing a clear framework for treatment and I will clarify the nature (and my role in) maintaining a therapeutic space. Sessions will provide you with a setting where all will be invited to explore/test out/try on new ways of communicating. I will be helping each participant to move toward more effective ways of sharing personal ideas, beliefs, needs, and concerns.
During sessions, I attend to both verbal content and nonverbal communication, including vocal tone, body language, periods of silence, and other indicators of emotional engagement or withdrawal. This multi-layered awareness helps identify underlying dynamics that may not be immediately apparent in the family’s spoken exchanges.
I recognize that addressing deeper emotionally charged issues and new ways of being together can be difficult. But I have been working with children and families In a variety of Settings, situations, and professional capacity since 2008. I would be glad to discuss my clinical approach with family work and describe some of the ways in which my previous experience and clinical training have allowed me to focus my understanding of how to meet the needs of a variety of situations and dynamics.
